NHTSA opens formal safety defect investigation of post-crash battery-related fire risk in Chevy Volts

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a formal safety defect investigation (NHTSA Action Number PE11037) to assess the risk of a battery-related fire in Chevy Volts that have been involved in a serious crash.
In May, NHTSA performed a New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) side pole impact test, followed by a post-impact rollover test on a Chevrolet Volt. In connection with that testing, NHTSA identified the potential for intrusion damage to the battery which may result in a substantial thermal reaction and fire. Twenty-one days after the 12 May 2011 testing, delayed thermal heating and pressure release resulted in a fire that consumed the Chevrolet Volt and three other vehicles in close proximity at the test facility........

A major forest fire in south Washington state could have been caused by a failure of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) installed on a truck traveling on Highway 97. Sparks coming of the vehicle are a suspected source of fire that started near a Greek Orthodox Monastery, 12 miles northeast of Goldendale, WA.

Vyššia hmotnosť batérii "istí" horšiu aktívnu bezpečnosť a to samotnou hmotnosťou i zmenou rozloženia hmotnosti. Pasívne tiež nie je taký zdroj napätia práve terno a v prípade nehody je riziko značné ...
I v dobrom prípade nezranenia posádky budú pri vážnejšej nehode batérie určite na odpis a tým i celý automobil ...pretože je to podstatná časť jeho ceny ...
Jen si zkus predstavit, ze kdyby jezdila auta na elektrinu a v roce 2011 by nekdo navrhl auto na benzin, najisto by ho zavreli do ustavu, nebot:
1) Benzin je tekava a vysoce horlava latka
2) V pripade netesnosti palivoveho systemu ma tendeci vzlinat a vsakovat se
3) Jeho pary smisene v urcitem pomeru se vzduchem vybuchuji napr. vlivem staticke elektriny.
Kdyby jeste dodal, ze to cele se bude startovat pomoci baterie naplene H2SO4, dostal by takovy clovek sveraci kazajku a v USA by proti nemu pouzili antiterorisckou legislativu.
V porovnani s tim jsou moderni baterie jen detskou hrackou. >:D
